FINANCIAL ACUMEN

In our world the Finance guy is like the navigator, he's not the gunner nor the Captain but he's there to help plot the course and advise how the journey is progressing. But so often this discipline is shrouded in mystery, is the most unliked and is often called "sales prevention" Who's not heard that term!

But not in the  TGM  world, our finance chief is the most operationally astute person we know (that's an accolade). He's the person who can engage with every part of the organization, apply strict governance but is the enabler rather than the barrier. We at TGM believe an integral finance area is key to the success of an entire operation, the more barriers the more angst. We begin our process with how finance see the business, not end there.

We often find the finance area is likely to be overburdened with corporate governance, statutory and legal compliance, historic reporting, and day to day financial management (i.e. paying the bills). Due to these core control responsibilities it is unable to step out and help lead the business forward.

At a high level a strong financial management function should be able to answer three simple key questions…

Where is the cheapest place to get the cash we need to develop the business?

Into which projects should we invest this cash to get the best returns?

How are we performing against our targets for these projects?

When resources are limited the finance function will fall back to its core control responsibilities and the business loses a potentially valuable guide.

Don't lose out. Get the right culture, the right people, and the right processes that help the business to grow profitably.

A strong and business focused finance team can add significantly to the top and bottom lines. Somewhere hidden in the numbers there will be a gem of information that will turn a business around. We make sure that the finance team are given the chance to find it.

Suffice to say our CEO's closest aide is our finance chief, our recovery package is focused around building a strong financial roadmap which ensures strict cost control and sustainable profitable growth .

" Firms that make more extensive use of a broad set of financial and non-financial measures earn higher share price returns than firms that do not "

Research findings: Based on data from 140 US Financial Services Firms, 2003.
